April has been traditionally known as Autism
Awareness Month, but in 2021, the Autism
Society of America changed the terminology
to
Autism Acceptance Month. As Christopher Banks, President and CEO
of Autism Society of America, said,
awareness is simply knowing that someone has
autism, while acceptance involves supporting
their development in the community.
Throughout this month, the world
celebrates people with autism and the
families that love and care for them. Spread
the word, as
acceptance is often the biggest challenge
for autistic individuals when finding and
developing supportive relationships.
Additionally, we can raise awareness of the
need for equal rights and resources for
autistic people.
This is more critical than ever, as the
latest estimates from the CDC show that
about 1 in 36
children has been identified with autism
spectrum disorder (ASD). Autism Acceptance
Month emphasizes the importance of embracing
advances that support people with autism and
their families to
choose their own path towards independence and wellbeing.
